In times of a worldwide Pandemic, businesses struggling to survive and many employees on furlough, personal development has arguably taken a back seat on most businesses’ agenda. Committed to making the best of a bad situation, the Alpha team decided to do the opposite and pushed for members of the team to focus on their personal development, rather than save it for when things were back to ‘normal’.

The role of Personal Development

“We’ve always placed high importance on personal development within the business.” says Head of Business Operations Louise Grant. “When the Pandemic hit and we had to place team members on furlough, we knew that it was key to keep their interest and engagement, despite them not being physically ‘at work’. At around the same time we decided to start offering online learning courses to our customers to offer a safe and convenient way to continue with their training. We gave each team member the opportunity to complete any courses that were of interest to them and expanded the offer to externally accredited courses as well.”

“The uptake and feedback from our team has been great. They have felt that they were able to make good use of their extra time on furlough and work on their personal development goals in their own time.”

Whilst many courses were through Alpha’s own online training platform, other courses were provided by Runway Training who ran Level 2, 3 and 4 training including the Introduction to ILM, Adult Education Training, CAVA (Assessor) and Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) training.

What our team thought

Courses completed were not just about business topics though. With the opportunity to choose from over 100 courses, some team members decided to educate themselves about topics that affected their personal life, such as dementia, mental health and nutrition.

Here’s what some of our team said about their experience.

Louise Everist: “I decided to start working towards my IQA TAQA L4 qualification which I had been wanting to do for some time. I also completed the Introduction to Emotional Intelligence online course.”

Claire Ireland: “Furlough enabled me to spend time exploring and developing my knowledge of different subjects. I decided to enrol myself on a digital marketing and social media course. I found these really useful, interesting and could use these new skills at work.

Emily Godward: “Throughout my time on Furlough, I spent time completing the Level 2 Introduction to ILM. This course gave me a greater understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a leader and built on new skills that I have been able to utilise day to day now I am back in the office.

Laura Pettengell: “During the pandemic I have completed multiple courses for my personal development. When Face Fit testing was in high demand from Dental practices in 2020, I attended our Face Fit Train the Tester course for my own knowledge to then pass onto customers who were booking this in. I have also completed numerous short courses online including; equality & diversity, Flexible working and Working time and holidays.

If you would like to give your team some options for their personal development, we are currently running a special offer of 50% off all of our online learning courses. The offer runs until 31 March 2021. Simply enter the code SPRING2021 when booking one of our online courses.
